The tables set, it’s Friday night
The room a blur of red and white and checkered pants
The band is here, the time is near
An angry man waits for beer as they start the dance

Even though there’s not too far to go
She knew that I was entirely too slow
The music’s too fast
I was afraid to polka

Begin, it does, the whirling spins
A circle forms on dancing twins at their peak of power
Clapping on the two and four
The crowd is calling out for more, it’s early hours

Even though there’s not that much to learn
I failed the steps and couldn’t make the turns
The dance was too hard
I was afraid to polka

And then the music caught me right between the hips
My feet began a two-step as I kissed her on the lips
I had the motion now
No longer ‘fraid to polka

A cautious step and then a twirl
I’d entered to a brand new world and I liked it here
As the room began to spin
The polka beat had now kicked-in and I’m here to stay

I was spinning like a record in the shop
My feet a blur of motion–they couldn’t make me stop
Yeah, they’d have to drag me home
I learned to love to polka
